Quantitative Network Engineering with Fault Tree Analysis

This is a simple paper outlining how to use some Risk Analysis Techniques with Network Engineering to obtain quantitative results. An attempt to turn network engineering from an artful guessing game into a science.

Labeling the Basic Events

The next step is fairly easy -- simply labeling all of the basic events and gates with a unique ID. Care must be taken to ensure that any basic events that contribute to the tree in more than one place are labeled with the same ID. This makes the analysis a bit easier and makes some of the failure modes of the entire system much more aparrent. In the Fault Tree style used here ,the label is nothing more than an alphanumeric ID that is inscribed inside the circle under a basic event.

So at this point the fully developed and completed Fault Tree, ready for analysis. Basic events have been labeled with a letter, and the gates with a number.
